The danger of "q=$1"; or, why you shouldn't ignore Drupal 404 errors.

Thu, 03/04/2010 - 04:07

Drupal makes your life very easy, but that's no excuse for being lazy. While profiling scripts today, I ran into something that, for whatever reason, never clicked before. I was running Xdebug and KCachegrind on some complex pages to get an idea where I could optimize. Xdebug has a profiler built in that creates files digestible by something like KCachegrind. With profiling on, you get a profile dump file for every PHP script you run.

Upgrading sites from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 - time to test it out!

Wed, 02/24/2010 - 00:37

With the second alpha release of Drupal 7 just out the door, a lot of effort has recently gone into making it possible to upgrade sites from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 (which is obviously a requirement for Drupal 7 to be released).

What's in store? Some new features for module developers, as well as an easier time for site administrators. Here's a quick rundown:

Use Apache Solr to search in files

Sun, 02/07/2010 - 17:51

Drupal's file handling capabilities keep getting better. Beyond the core upload module, the filefield module for CCK has enabled us to build sites with all sorts of files; documents, images, music, videos, and so forth. Searching within these docuements, however, has never been a common feature on Drupal sites. Some solutions have existed, particularly for extracting texts from PDFs and common wordprocessing documents. With Apache Solr, the attachments module, and an extension library called Tika, things can be much better. With Tika you can extract texts not only from Microsoft Office, Open Office, and PDF documents, you can also get text and metadata from images, songs, Flash movies and zipped archives. Searching for these texts is done as part of the normal Apache Solr driven site search.

Tue, 02/02/2010 - 21:15
Tech Support Case Studies

If Facebook has shown us anything, it's that website users like to get timely notifications via email if there is something new to be seen on the site. Acquia Drupal includes the comment notify module that can help achieve this goal for your site. It sends email messages to content authors and commentators whenever new comments are added to content. There are ample subscription options to suit everyone, and an unsubscribe mechanism so that nobody has to endure unwanted items in their inbox.

Help Acquia help Gartner with social software report

Mon, 02/01/2010 - 23:40

You might remember that a while ago, Drupal was promoted to the 'Visionaries' category in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Social Software in the Workplace. For someone unfamiliar with all the social software vendors and projects, the choice can be overwhelming and Gartner's reports can carry a lot of weight in the decision making process. Drupal's promotion to the 'Visionaries' category was a big win for all of us.

Drupal DevRoom at Fosdem 2010

Wed, 01/27/2010 - 22:15

FOSDEM is one of the great European tech conferences, held every year in Brussels. Two years ago I spoke there and introduced the Apache Solr module to the world. Dries and Gàbor introduced Acquia. So much has happened in those two years!

This year, on Sunday, February 7, I'll be back to once again talk about Apache Solr and state-of-the-art search techniques. There's a whole Drupal track, called the Drupal DevRoom, and plenty of other interesting sessions going on, too. If you can make it to Brussels for Fosdem I highly recommend it. It's full of that nitty-gritty hard-core geek stuff that makes open source software tick!

P.S.: The FOSDEM site uses Drupal, of course!

Using Syslog Module and Splunk to Rock Your Reporting World

Fri, 01/22/2010 - 01:22

Drupal's Syslog module is one of the core modules that I find is often overlooked. On a high traffic site, it's generally a good idea to reduce the db traffic as much as possible. Besides, since the database logging doesn't rotate/archive logs, it is only marginally helpful. So, while you need watchdog, it can quickly bite you in the... sorry, bad pun, but you get the idea. The good news is that we can still log all of these helpful messages in a flat file using Syslog and do some insanely cool reporting using Splunk.
